Scalar Scalar is a (multi-)piece for indeterminate instrumentation. It is a notational experiment/space abstracted from specific contexts which aims to operate as a specific ambiguity. Scalar explores interpretation in the space between precise notation (where notation pretends to accurately describe/prescribe sonic events) and abstract graphics (where metaphoric open-endedness resides). By this, the notational image fluctuates in order to stimulate/obfuscate/challenge the performer to jiggle between these spaces when approaching the performance. To this end, the score employs vagueness/obscurity, multi-layerings, associative score network (on the threshold of recognition), smudging and squinting, combination of handwritten and computer-generated graphics, and deliberate verisimilitude of notational detail. First version of the piece, for two contrabasses, was developed in collaboration with ELISION Ensemble, in particular, Kathryn Schulmeister and Rohan Dasika, and premiered in Melbourne Recital Centre, 9th September 2023.
